About PPMtv

The City of Portsmouth acquired the rights for a community cable television station in 2008 and in 2010, PPMtv’s first board of directors organized to lay the foundation for a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, Portsmouth Public Media.

From its original by-laws, “Portsmouth Public Media will endeavor to establish, operate, and promote non-commercial public access media channels and services.”

Mission Statement

To make the sharing of local news, views, information, arts and entertainment readily accessible to residents, and nonprofit and business organizations of the greater Portsmouth area.

Vision Statement

To be a vibrant, appreciated source of local news, views, information, arts, and entertainment that:

  • Airs programs reflecting the interests of a broad range of individual residents, local business and nonprofit organizations;
  • Involves all members of the community – diverse ages, socio‐economic status and technological abilities;
  • Employs multiple methods of producing and delivering content in order producers to create, and viewers to access, content;
  • Embraces available and emerging technology for efficiency of operations.

In 2011, PPMtv moved into the old South End Meeting House, creatively renovating the historic community space into a studio, control room, editing facilities, and office space. On December 5, 2011, PPMtv broadcast its first test programming, a series of 3 films from local directors.

In February 2012, PPMtv began working with Portsmouth High School students to produce the Clipper News Report and in March of that same year, PPMtv began broadcasting original member-produced programming.

In 2013, PPMtv expanded its facilities and its programming, added a live stream to its website, and held its first live audience production – Holiday LIVE.

In 2023, PPMtv studios moved to the Fox Run Mall in Newington.

Following the Portsmouth City Council’s 2025 decision to not renegotiate the policy governing PPMtv’s funding, the organization has been forced to shut down it’s studio and suspend production.

While our studio at the Fox Run Mall has closed, Portsmouth High School has warmly welcomed us in. As we work with our new partners to integrate Film & Video Production into the PHS academic agenda we will, simultaneously, redesign our organization and the services we provide our community.

Although we are not able to create content at this time, we welcome your video submissions for review. We look forward to inviting you in to produce the programming you want to see on TV. Please stay tuned for updates on our organizational progress.

As of June 2025, PPMtv is governed and operated solely by volunteers.
